Swarrrm - Black Bong

Another week passes and money is still tight so here's another release I want to share with you!

Swarrrm is a very chaotic grindcore band from Japan and they are simply insane. I've never heard anything quite so "br00tal" or just plain scary, the vocals will send tingles up and down your spine and haunt your fucking dreams. The first album I heard by these guys was "Black Bong" and I fell in love within the first 10 seconds of hearing "Snow". The growling, the screaming, the insanely fast music, it seems like someone is injecting pure awesomeness into your brain and it's taking everything you have to process it. Sometime's it just sounds demonic, the way the dual vocals growl over each other and other times it sounds like something you would hear from a creature as it takes it's last breaths in some kind of horror movie, especially at the end of "Cherry Tree" and on the title track "Black Bong", you can just imagine the singer on the ground, crawling around, face wretched in agony while performing that masterpiece. This album is the best 34 minutes you'll find anywhere of any genre.

Track listing:

01. Snow
02. Cherry Tree
03. Fissure
04. Sky
05. Road
06. Light
07. Wind
08. Black Bong

If you have trouble getting your hands on this release,(I know what it's like to not have money) just send me an email or contact me on Last.fm

Loma Prieta - Last City

Well I probably won't be going to any shows this week (or next week, no money = no fun) so instead, I'll be telling you about old and new releases by some of my favorite bands...

So I recently got my hands on Loma Prieta's latest release "Last City" and I couldn't be happier. They have been one of my favorite bands for awhile and so have the other bands related to them (Sailboats, Get Get Go, Archeopteryx, etc.). My first thoughts were that they sound a lot different since "Matrimony" and even more different since "Our LP is Your EP". The song structure, vocals, almost their whole sound seems to have changed. In fact, they sound like a totally different band. That's not to say its worse, or better. Their demo is what I fell in love with and "Our LP is your EP" only made me worship them more so that's the sound I expect to hear when I listen to them. I'm sure this record will grow on me and "Trilogy 2 (Planar Analysis)" already makes me not worry about these guys going in a direction I don't like. (Not that they would care nor should they.) The last three tracks on the record are just simply amazing and quickly became my favorites on the record. All in all, a very good release that is worth every penny. I can't wait to hear what the band does next and hopefully I'll get to see them live one day.

Track listing:

01. Worn Path
02. Careful Subliminal
03. Trilogy 1 (Sick Cities)
04. Trilogy 2 (Planar Analysis)
05. Trilogy 3 (Fall Days)
06. Armor
07. Bridges
08. David Fung
09. Script
10. Last City

If you have trouble getting your hands on this release,(I know what it's like to not have money) just send me an email or contact me on Last.fm

Spazz show: Guitar Bomb, My Milky Way Arms, Stone Avenue, and The Popo

So I show up at the Spazz Thursday night and the place was still locked up from last Saturday. One of the acts that were supposed to perform that night, The Popo, was there also and we hung out on the sidewalk talking for about an hour while they tried to get a phone number for Jeff, the guy that runs the place.

It was around 9pm when Jeff showed up and told us that the shows would be at different places for now because of the Spazz being shut down and then we followed him to a house where the other bands were already setting up. After hanging out and meeting people and the band members, the show got under way. First up was Guitar Bomb from Brooklyn, NY.

These guys were perfect to open the show because of the energy they had and the amazing drumming. People were still just arriving so it was a few people getting into the music and dancing around. The music had a great sound to it that I can’t really describe and the songs were all really good. "Shit Stains" was a standout and so was the last song, whose title I didn't catch, also a Metallica cover that got people moving. By the end of the set, everyone was energized and ready for the next act which was My Milky Way Arms from Houston, TX.

This was the band everyone, including me, came to see and it showed, the room was crowded and people were out in hallways trying to listen. The music was simply amazing with an electronic/ambient sound to it and the crowd was really into it right away, dancing around and tapping their feet. One of the songs was about Han Solo and the vocals were great, as they were on the other songs. The set was a short one compared to the other acts but it was definitely worth the waiting. The third act was Stone Avenue from Florida.

Now these guys were really good with the crowd, a lot of conversation between the songs and it's always great when a band interacts a lot with the crowd. The music had a folky feel to it with a hint of country and had a great sound. Really energetic and the crowd was singing along and bouncing around to the songs. The set might have been the longest with a country song that was surprisingly amazing and a few dance tracks. I must point out that Harris, one of the guitarist was really, really good and rocked the fuck out. The last act was The Popo from Philadelphia, PA.

As I mentioned earlier, I had a chance to hang out with these guys before the show started and I was looking forward to seeing them live. They did not disappoint and were the best act of the night. They describe themselves as having a grungy, sloppy sound and it sounds fucking awesome. They really worked the crowd and bounced around the room, banging out songs and laying down great vocals. "I'm Coming to Get You" was probably the best song of the set and the crowd really enjoyed it a lot. When they finished the set, there were shouts for more and they ended up playing two more songs before it was all said and done.

It was a great show with a great atmosphere, great bands, and great people. I will definitely try to get back out there next Thursday and bring you guys more pics and coverage. Until then, Ill try to get my hearing back.
